The Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003

The Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) was passed in 2003 by President George W.  Bush as a means to prevent sexual abuse in prisons. This article by the Bureau of Justice Assistance outlines the PREA and gives further resources about the act from more recent years.

Serious Mental Illness Prevalence in Jails and Prisons

The National Institute of Mental Health defines a serious mental illness (SMI) as "a mental, behavioral, or emotional disorder resulting in serious functional impairment, which substantially interferes with or limits one or more major life activities."
