This past week I wrote my first research assessment for the year. It was over a study I found that had to do with what factors (in the categories of clinical, institutional, or criminological) had an effect on the rates of suicide in prisons. I was very happy to see that the study looked at multiple countries, as well as women (not just men). One of the main conclusions made in the study was that mental health care needs to be just as available to inmates as the general population. Overall this study set up a great line of questioning for me and shows that this topic will be promising.
This week I want to find a resource that discusses the actual treatment (if any) of inmates with mental illness in prisons. The study said that inmates with mental illness diagnoses had a high risk of suicide, and I wonder if part of that has to do with inmates not being treated for mental illness. If my assumptions are correct this might be an issue I can address with my Original Work later this semester.
So far, I am happy with the research I have been able to get done, and I am looking forward to my next steps. This week I also want to try to get into contact with a view professionals to possibly have as contacts throughout this year. Because of the issues that I had at the beginning of the year in ISM 1, I am definitely not taking any of my success with research so far for granted, and I will try to continue this year with that mindset.
