This past week (including the weekend) I had a great interaction with one of the Co-Presidents of Princeton's Students for Prison Education, Abolition and Reform (SPEAR) organization. I reached out to see if anyone had information on/would have wanted to have a conversation about mental illness and how it has related to recidivism in prisons. While no one had information pertaining specifically to recidivism, the Co-President shared a source having to do with diversion programs. It was from the Vera Institute of Justicex and had lots of useful information.

This may be one of the possible solutions that I am looking for. If there is a way to reduce the rate of incarceration, that means that the amount of those who have been reincarcerated will also be reduced. I will continue looking into some of these specific models (especially the Mobile Crisis Team Model) and maybe find a solution in addition to the ones I have already seen.

There was another individual I was hoping to reach out to after reading her work, however, I have not found any contact information.

After narrowing down my work to just look at mental illness and recidivism (as opposed to mental illness, sexual victimization, and recidivism) I feel like I have a much stronger base of information to work from. My main plan for this week is to begin gathering resources and possible contacts.

Wish me luck!
